The Tail of Emily Windsnap (2003) is a children's fantasy novel written by Liz Kessler. The story is about a land-born half-mermaid who discovers her family history and explores around to find the truth.
Emily Windsnap is a girl who lives on the boat The King of the Sea with her mother Mary Penelope. She requests swimming lessons repeatedly until her mother relents, sending her to swimming lesons. After a few shocking incidents, Emily discovers she is half mermaid (he feet become a tail when she is immersed in water). She meets another mermaid whose name is Shona, and they together discover that Emily's father is actually currently imprisoned in the mermaid prison. They plan to save him, but do not know how. Later, Emily finds a chance to carry out her "daydream" plan and manages to drive the boat near the prison. Her Mother follows, and regains her memories of Jake Windsnap (Emily's father). They are caught by Neptune and held in a trial, where Emily manages to convince Neptune to let them go. Neptune releases the entire Windsnap family on one condition: they must live on a secret island.
